Why protein is critical for sports performance

When we train we ask a tremendous amount from our muscles. Muscles are made of protein but use carbohydrates as a fuel source. Training stimulates the muscle to grow and its needs protein to do that

On a daily basis, we have to sustain the muscle output for energy and performance. Muscle performance relies on protein as well as carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are the fuel for immediately accessible energy. They need to work in conjunction with protein. Protein makes sure the muscle is fed to sustain itself. If there is not enough protein the muscle will start to consume itself and will not be used as an energy source.

If you consume less protein than is needed by the muscle to sustain itself,

the body goes into starvation mode and will break into the muscle for fuel.

Weight will be lost on the scale but at the expense of the muscle.

‘Tired, aching muscles during an event means too little protein intake”

The correct amount of protein to be taken on a daily basis means you have to do a body composition check, work out the proper muscle density ( how clean is the muscle inside) then always consume the minimum protein for your muscle on a daily basis.

Less protein means ‘starving’ the muscle which is detrimental.

More protein will be added versus your time of training and performance and time of endurance.

It is essential that we get this correct otherwise we “ Hit the wall” during an event.
